Preparing for Your Content Tutoring Appointment

Before your appointment, take some time to reflect on what you understand, what you are still working on, and where you ned additional support. 

Assessing your learning ahead of time:

• Helps you identify areas where you need additional support so you can prioritize them during your session.
• Will help you and your Content Tutor better determine how to best use your appointment time.
• Allows you to spend more time working through the concepts and practice problems that are most important to you.

Bring practice problems or examples that you would like to work through with your Content Tutor. These may include:

• Example problems from your class notes, textbook,  homework, or other course materials
• Graded and returned midterms or other assessments you would like to review

Your appointment time is reserve specifically for you. Arriving on time allows you to make the most of the time available and ensures your Content Tutor is prepared to work with you.

Before your appointment:

• Check your appointment confirmation email for the date, time, and location.
• Add your appointment to your calendar when you book it.
• If you can no longer attend, cancel your appointment as soon as possible so another student has the opportunity to book the time.

If you have an online appointment, please going from a space where you can have your camera and microphone on for the duration of your session. 

Using your camera and microphone:

• Makes it easier for you and your Content Tutor to communicate and engage with one another.
• Helps your Content Tutor gauge your understanding and adjust their support accordingly.
• Creates a more interaction and connected tutoring experience.

Your Content Tutor will work alongside you to address your questions, work through practice problems, and strengthen your understanding of the course material. Tutoring is most effective when you actively participate in the learning process.

During your session, your may be asked to:

• Answer your Content Tutor's guiding questions
• Independently attempt practice problems
• Explain your thinking or approach
• Ask additional questions as they come up

Learning something new often involves trying, making mistakes, and trying again. Your tutoring session is a space where you can work through challenging problems without needing to have everything figured out beforehand.

During your session:

• Don't be afraid to try a problem even if you're unsure of your answer.
• Share your thinking with your Content Tutor, even if you think you might be wrong.
• Use mistakes as opportunities to identify what your understand and where you may need additional support.
• Be open to feedback and trying a different approach.

 Making mistakes is a natural part of learning. Your Content Tutor is there to help you work through challengers, understand your mistakes, and build confidence to approach similar problems independently.
