Meet the Writing Consultants

We hire and train undergraduate students to work as peer writing consultants in Writing Services at the Teaching and Learning Commons. Each of our writing consultants receives over 70 hours of training every year, in addition to regular observations and performance feedback. 

Our writing consultants are an integral part of our staff and the services we offer to the campus. As a result, we are deeply invested in their professional and intellectual development. The majority of our writing consultants stay with us for many years.

  • Anneli HA.

    Marshall College, Political Science-Public Policy/ Chicanx/Latinx Studies

    Hey everyone! My name is Anneli and I am a third-year student in Marshall College. I am majoring in Political Science - Public Policy and Chicanx/Latinx Studies. I have writing experience in undergrad with AWP, the DOC series, and I am also very comfortable with research-based writing, synthesis, argumentative writing, and personal statements. I really enjoy being able to help other writers express their thinking and ideas in a way that makes them proud of their writing. I also love learning about writing, how to express myself, and experiencing ideas through other peoples’ writing. I am happy to help writers through every point in the writing process, whether it be getting initial ideas onto the paper, or giving final advice and tips! I also understand that writing can be a vastly different experience for everyone, and I am willing to provide accommodations to any student.

    I am happy to work with students in both English and Spanish. I can’t wait to work with you!

    Hello! My name is Destiney and I am a 3rd year Communication and Social Psychology double major from Muir College! I love writing, from argumentative essays to creative fiction. I have a journalistic background through my work as a Managing Editor for the Muir Quarterly (The MQ, UCSD’s premier satire newspaper), and as an opinion writer for the UCSD Guardian. In addition, I have experience drafting speeches, presentations, and working with professional documentation (analyzing records, managing business correspondence, and other research reports). I believe writing is a collaborative process, and my goal as a consultant is to provide a space to let your ideas flow freely!

    I have ADHD, so I am well acquainted with the difficulties of obtaining the necessary amount of accommodations throughout the writing process. Because of that, I am open to working with you and offering quiet spaces, visual aids, and other support you may need!

    I primarily offer services in English, but I am able to understand Tagalog if needed!

    Hello! My name is Harrison and I am a third-year Political Science major with a minor in Computational Social Science. As Muir student, I have extensive experience completing as well as tutoring other students in the MCWP series. I also have experience working on research and academic writing projects, specifically relating to political science but with skills that apply to all kinds of fields in social science.

    Having begun work as a tutor at the beginning of my sophomore year, I have not only familiarized myself with the Analytical Writing Program (AWP) as well as every college's writing program, but also working on cover letters, personal statements, and a myriad of other types of writing. This means that for anything you have to bring it to me at any stage of the writing process, I would love to work on it with you.

    I am a native English speaker and speak intermediate Chinese which I can utilize in our conversations.

    Nice to meet you! My name is Jackie, and I’m a Human Developmental Sciences major at Seventh College. I have worked with all types of writing, ranging from research papers and literary analysis to playwriting and personal biographies. My goal is to encourage writing that you feel connected to, other people can engage with, and most importantly, makes you proud (on top of meeting whatever requirements might be needed for a class). I love working with people, and I want to make sure that writing is as non-intimidating as possible and is something you can learn from and have a good time doing in the process.

    No matter what stage you are in or what your process is, I will always be happy to brainstorm, help draft, look over, or just talk about your writing with you. If you like to pace back and forth between ideas, I will pace with you, if rapping helps to get some juices flowin’, I will bring out the sunglasses, and if you're like Dan Brown and need to hang upside down, that one might be hard to coordinate, but we will figure it out! If it helps, I am also semi-fluent in French and Mandarin.
